Office Overview Summary
Robert M. Morgenthau was sworn in for his eighth term as the Manhattan District Attorney on January 31, 2002. He first took office in 1975, and has continued in the long tradition of non-partisan administration of justice in the New York County District Attorney's Office.
The New York County District Attorney's Office investigates and prosecutes approximately 100,000 criminal cases annually. The Office employs close to 500 Assistant District Attorneys and approximately 700 support staff, making it one of the largest law firms -- public or private -- in the nation.
The Office's jurisdiction is coextensive with the island of Manhattan -- the commercial, financial, cultural, and media capital of the nation. In addition to its 1.5 million residents, Manhattan attracts more than one million commuters and visitors daily--it is the hub of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 30 million.
The work of the New York County District Attorney's Office is divided as follows:
- Executive Management
The legal executive staff works with the District Attorney to manage all aspects of the Office. A number of non-legal units also report directly to the executive staff. - Trial Division
The Trial Division is the largest division of the office and has principal responsibility for prosecuting misdemeanor and felony street crime. - Investigation Division
Assistant District Attorneys in the Investigation Division work with investigators, analysts, and accountants to prosecute sophisticated white collar crimes, public and private sector corruption, and organized crime. - Appeals Bureau
The Appeals Bureau handles all of the Office's appellate work in state and federal courts. - Legal Training
The Legal Training Unit is responsible for training Assistant District Attorneys in all legal areas. - Administrative Services
Administrative Services is composed of three departments -- Personnel, Payroll Services, and Operations -- that are responsible for coordinating and delivering the Office's administrative services. - Fiscal
The Fiscal Department is responsible for managing the Office's financial resources. - Management Information Services (MIS)
The MIS department is responsible for all of the Office's computer services.
