DA VANCE: MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER FOR BATTERY PARK CITY DOUBLE SHOOTING

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of JASON WRIGHT, 37, for wounding two victims in a shooting incident near Battery Park. WRIGHT is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. “Yet again, we see an everyday dispute devolve into chaos the moment a gun is introduced,” said District Attorney Vance. “Here, the defendant is charged with pulling the trigger on two victims in broad daylight — one of whom was a random bystander. In an urban environment, gunfire does not discriminate between intended targets and perfect strangers. My Office will continue to hold gun offenders fully accountable.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, on April 24, 2017, at approximately 3:10 p.m, WRIGHT and a male victim — both selling tickets to ferry cruise tours— were engaged in a verbal dispute on Washington Street near Battery Place. As the argument escalated, the defendant drew a gun and fired a shot in the direction of the male victim. The shot missed, however, and struck a female bystander several feet away. He then fired another shot at the male victim, striking him in the chest, before fleeing to Brooklyn.

Surveillance video footage captured WRIGHT showing off the weapon to unknown individuals later that day. NYPD detectives apprehended the defendant in Brooklyn two days later.

Assistant District Attorney Brendan Tracy is handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Warren Murray, Chief of Trial Bureau 50, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance thanked the NYPD for assisting with this case, particularly Detectives Rafael Tatis of the Manhattan South Narcotics Division and Robert Hahn of the Manhattan South Homicide Division.

[1] The charges contained in the indictment are merely allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
