Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today the arrest and indictment of 16 men and one woman on multiple counts including felony narcotics conspiracy and numerous felony narcotics sale and possession charges stemming from two investigations into heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine dealing in Harlem. A separately-charged 18th individual has also been arrested and charged in Manhattan Criminal Court with selling crack cocaine and a firearm in Upper Manhattan. All of the arrests and indictments were the culmination of investigations conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Homicide Investigation Unit and the New York City Police Department’s Manhattan North Narcotics Zone. The investigation used undercover detectives and surveillance techniques to identify the defendants and gather evidence of their drug trafficking activities. The most recent investigation began in February of 2007. MARK HAMMOND, a/k/a “JD GREEN EYES,” GREGORY HERMAN, a/k/a “JD FATS,” OMAR KAYOU, a/k/a “JD OLDER BIG,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD BALD,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD GIANTS,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD BALD HEAVY,” LEONARD BURWELL, a/k/a “JD GREEN POLO,” and MARK WILSON sold both heroin and cocaine out of and near a bodega on 137th Street and 5th Avenue to undercover police detectives. The bodega was located 417 feet from P.S. 197 John B. Russwurm and around the corner from St. Mark the Evangelist School. The cocaine was sold in amounts up to and exceeding two ounces and the heroin was sold in glassines primarily under the brand name “HBO,” however, on several occasions it was also sold under the brand names “Grey Goose” and “VIP.” Defendants HAMMOND, BURWELL, and JOHN DOE, a/k/a “BALD HEAVY,” were arrested yesterday. The second investigation began in December of 2005. JESSE COWHERD, a/k/a “JD JESSE,” MARCUS DREHER, a/k/a “JD SMILEY,” MICHAEL MEANS, a/k/a “JD MIKE,” ANTIQUAN MYERS, a/k/a “JD ANT,” JAMES RIVERO, a/k/a “JD SLIM,” PENNY SMITH, a/k/a “JD PENNY,” CURTIS WOODLEY, a/k/a “JD CURT,” a/k/a “JD WHITE,” a/k/a “JD BLUE/GRAY,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD TONY,” and JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD SLICK,” sold narcotics, principally crack cocaine to undercover police detectives in the area of the Harlem River Houses. The defendants sold from apartments in the complex and outside locations in and around the Harlem River Houses, which are located between 151st and 153rd Street and Macombs Place and Seventh Avenue. The drugs were sold to other narcotics dealers and to street level customers. The defendants were arrested on November 15 and 16th, 2007. In the case at 137th Street and 5th Avenue: MARK HAMMOND, a/k/a “JD GREEN EYES,” GREGORY HERMAN, a/k/a “JD FATS,” OMAR KAYOU, a/k/a “JD OLDER BIG,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD BALD,” JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD GIANTS,” and MARK WILSON are all charged with Conspiracy in the Second Degree a Class B felony, which is punishable by up to 25 years. MARK HAMMOND, a/k/a “JD GREEN EYES,” (two counts), JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD BALD HEAVY,” and LEONARD BURWELL, a/k/a “JD GREEN POLO,” are charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree a Class A-1 Felony, which is punishable by up to 20 years. MARK HAMMOND, a/k/a “JD GREEN EYES,” (14 counts), GREGORY HERMAN, a/k/a “J.D. FATS,” (two counts), MARK WILSON (two counts), OMAR KAYOU, a/k/a “JD OLDER BIG,” (two counts), JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD BALD,” and JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD GIANTS,” are all charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree a Class B Felony, which is punishable by up to 9 years. MICHAEL MEANS, a/k/a “JD MIKE,” ANTIQUAN MYERS, a/k/a “JD ANT,” PENNY SMITH, a/k/a “JD PENNY,” CURTIS WOODLEY, a/k/a “JD CURT,” a/k/a “JD WHITE,” a/k/a “JD BLUE/GRAY,” (three counts), and JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD SLICK,” are all charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree a Class A-II Felony, which is punishable by up to 10 years JESSE COWHERD, a/k/a “JD JESSE,” MARCUS DREHER, a/k/a “JD SMILEY,” (four counts), ANTIQUAN MYERS, a/k/a “JD ANT,” (four counts), JAMES RIVERO, a/k/a “JD SLIM,” PENNY SMITH, a/k/a “JD PENNY,” (three counts), and JOHN DOE, a/k/a “JD TONY,” are all charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree a Class B Felony, which is punishable by up to 9 years.
