Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today the arrest and indictment of a former personal assistant for stealing over $43,000 from Frederick Iseman, the founder and managing partner of Caxton-Iseman Capital LLC, a private equity investment firm located at 500 Park Avenue.
From August 2005 until November 11, 2006, FATIMA MONAHAN, 36, worked as a personal and professional assistant for Frederick Iseman. As Mr. Iseman’s professional assistant, MONAHAN’s responsibilities included scheduling appointments, booking flights, making hotel reservations, opening and sorting mail, and other administrative tasks. As Mr. Iseman’s personal assistant, Ms. Monahan’s responsibilities included a wide variety of duties, such as coordinating household maintenance, personal and family appointments, running errands, and preparing checks for the payment of personal bills. The defendant earned approximately $125,000 per year.
The investigation revealed that from June 2006 until November 11, 2006, MONAHAN used Iseman’s American Express credit card for numerous personal expenses. The defendant used the Internet for the majority of her purchases. She bought high-end clothing, shoes, children’s wear, food, and household items ranging from kitchen utensils to sheet sets from stores such as Amazon.com, Searle, Gap, Abercrombie and Fitch, Yoox.com, and Shopbop.com. She also purchased and used gift cards from Bergdorf Goodman.
The investigation further revealed that MONAHAN also used Iseman’s personal Mercedes Benz for her own private use without his knowledge or consent. Monahan was authorized to use his car in a limited fashion for specific work purposes only, such as picking up Iseman at the airport or taking the car to be serviced. Near the end of her employment, however, MONAHAN was using the car on a daily basis for herself.
The indictment charges MONAHAN with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony, which is punishable by up to seven years in prison, and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle in the Third Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year in jail.
Assistant District Attorney Om Gillett of the Special Prosecutions Bureau presented the case to the Grand Jury under the supervision of Bureau Chief Thomas Wornom and Deputy Bureau Chief Joan Delaney.
Mr. Morgenthau would like to thank the New York State Police Department, Senior Investigator Randy Donaldson and Investigator Shawn McPhillips, New York State Police, for their assistance in the investigation.
