Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today that a New York Police Department Sergeant was arrested yesterday for sexually abusing a child from 2002 to 2007.
JAIME KATZ, 33, has been an officer with the NYPD for eight years and a sergeant at the Police Academy for two years. The investigation revealed that KATZ met the male victim through another police sergeant who was involved with a mentoring program. From 2002 to November 2007, the defendant continuously abused the victim on a weekly basis, beginning when he was 12 year’s old. The abuse occurred in a number of locations, including the victim’s Manhattan apartment, the defendant’s car, the defendant’s house in Rockland County, New York, and the defendant’s sister’s house in Bergen County, New Jersey, as well as during various family vacations. The investigation is continuing.
KATZ has been charged with two counts of Criminal Sexual Act in the Second Degree, one count Criminal Sexual Act in the Third Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Criminal Sexual Act in the Second Degree is a D felony, which is punishable by up to seven years in prison. Criminal Sexual Act in the Third Degree is an E felony, which is punishable by up to four years in prison. Endangering the Welfare of a Child is a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year in jail.
The defendant was arraigned last night in Manhattan Criminal Court, AR3. Bail was set at in the amount of $500,000 bond or $350,000 cash.
Assistant District Attorney John Temple is handling the prosecution under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Lisa Friel, Sex Crimes Unit Chief. Senior Investigators Edward Tacchi and Lauren Liebhauser assigned to the Sex Crimes Unit/Investigations Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office were the lead investigators.
Mr. Morgenthau would like to thank the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Clarkstown Police Department, the Rockland Country District Attorney’s Office, and Bergen County law enforcement for their assistance in this investigation.
