Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today the indictment of a resident of the Polo Grounds Towers in Harlem in connection with a shooting there last month that left one person dead and another wounded. MICHAEL SERVICE, 23, was arraigned on murder charges stemming from the August 15, 2008 shooting at 2971 Eighth Avenue also known as Frederick Douglass Boulevard. The shooting occurred in a courtyard of a building at the Polo Grounds, a 1,612-apartment housing complex in four 30-story buildings. The Polo Grounds Towers are bordered by Frederick Douglass Boulevard, Harlem River Drive and West 155th Street. SERVICE was arrested on August 15, 2008. The investigation leading to today’s indictment revealed that SERVICE was involved in a dispute with the deceased male victim which later resulted in the shooting. SERVICE pulled out a gun and started shooting at the victim. A second male victim was also injured in the shooting. SERVICE has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree, a class A-I felony, two counts of Assault in the First Degree, a class B felony, one count of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a class D felony, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony. Service faces 25 years to life on the class A-I felony charge, 8 to 25 years on the class B felony charges, 5 to 15 years on the class C felony charges and 3 ½ to 7 years on the class D felony charge, all in prison. SERVICE was arraigned today in State Supreme Court and remanded. Mr. Morgenthau thanked the New York City Police Department’s 32nd Precinct Detective Squad and the Manhattan North Homicide Task Force.
