STATEMENT FROM MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY VANCE |
|
| “Today we give honor and recognition to one of America’s greatest heroes, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dr. King’s vision for America was one of hope, freedom, opportunity and justice for all. He dedicated his life to that vision and today we are still building on Dr. King’s ideals here in Manhattan as we grapple with issues like gang and domestic violence, the exploitation of immigrants and the persistence of guns and drugs on our streets. In order to obtain the secure and livable world that Dr. King envisioned for the next generations, we must start by taking ownership of our neighborhoods as a collective community and instill in our youth Dr. King’s principles. “We must do all that we can to ensure not only safety in
our streets and homes, but also fairness in our criminal justice
system. There is still progress to be made in this country as we
fight against wrongful convictions, root out racial or cultural
bias, and increase protection of the most vulnerable in our communities
from those who prey upon them. Safety and fairness are the inextricable
twin sides of justice. One without the other is unacceptable. As
Dr. King so wisely said, ‘True peace is not merely the absence
of tension, it is the presence of justice.’” ### Additional news available at: www.manhattanda.org |
