(By Cy Vance) For the first time in a decade, a clear path exists for New York State lawmakers to end the Jim Crow-era injustice preventing thousands of their fellow citizens from accessing the ballot box.
“It really is no different from him to come up and to seek out to kill black men than a radical Islamist to come to a place to seek out, to kill, men and women who weren’t of their faith,” Vance said.
One woman described being touched inappropriately and threatened that child welfare authorities would be called to take her kids away if she complained. Another said she was so traumatized by a strip search she couldn’t go back.
The guards “blocked exits, surrounded visitors on all sides, forcibly removed visitors’ clothing, including underwear,” the charges said.
“There is no excuse for violating the human rights of New Yorkers visiting our City’s jails. As alleged, these officers flagrantly abused their power when they ignored their training and subjected visitors to humiliating and unlawful searches.”
