D.A. Bragg: Rape Indictment for Man Accused of UWS Apartment Building Attack

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of JAMEL MCIVER, 30, for following a stranger into her Upper West Side apartment building and raping her. MCIVER is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Rape in the First Degree, one count of Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree, and one count of Burglary in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony. “The horrific conduct charged in the indictment is beyond disturbing,” said District Attorney Alvin Bragg. “New Yorkers should not have to fear for their safety when they walk into their apartment buildings. According to court documents and statements made on the record, on March 4, 2023, at approximately 1:20 a.m., MCIVER followed a 21-year-old stranger while she was walking into the elevator of her apartment building. He threatened the victim before pulling her into a staircase where he sexually assaulted and raped her. MCIVER then pulled her down multiple staircases and eventually outside the building, where he let her go. MCIVER removed his jacket and sweatshirt and fled the scene.

Assistant D.A.s Jonathan Carfagno and James Clarke (Trial Bureau 40) are handling the prosecution of the case under the supervision of Assistant D.A.s Shannon Lucey and Vanessa Puzio (Deputy Chiefs of the Sex Crimes Unit), Nicole Blumberg (Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit), and Executive Assistant D.A. Justin McNabney (Chief of the Special Victims Division). Sex Crimes Unit Investigative Analyst Noah Taylor assisted with the investigation The Witness Aid Services Unit is also providing valuable support.

D.A. Bragg also thanked the New York City Police Department’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad.
