DA Vance Announces Indictment of Former Mount Sinai Physician for Sexually Abusing Four Female Patients

March 24, 2016

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of DAVID NEWMAN, 45, a former emergency room physician, for sexually abusing four female patients at Mount Sinai Hospital between August 2015 and January 2016. The defendant is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree and four counts of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree.[1]

“As alleged in this indictment, four young women who came to the hospital for medical treatment were sexually abused by the very doctor entrusted with their care,” said District Attorney Vance. “One was sedated to the point of being physically helpless – a nightmare scenario for any patient to endure. I would like to thank these brave women for their strength in coming forward, and encourage any other additional potential victims to call our Sex Crimes Hotline at 212-335-9373.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, NEWMAN sexually abused four female patients between the ages of 18- and 29-years-old seeking medical care at Mount Sinai Hospital’s emergency room between August 2015 and January 2016. On three separate occasions in August, September, and October 2015, NEWMAN allegedly sexually abused three women who came to the emergency room for illnesses including a headache, a cold, and a rash. On a fourth occasion in January 2016, NEWMAN is charged with sexually abusing a female patient being treated for shoulder pain after sedating her with additional medication that he administered.

Assistant District Attorney Eun-Ha Kim is handling the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Martha Bashford, Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Trial Preparation Assistant Jessica Gerson is assisting with the case.

District Attorney Vance thanked the members of the NYPD’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad, especially Detective Eusebio Santos.
