Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of TYRONE HOWARD, 31, for murdering NYPD Detective Randolph Holder in East Harlem last month. HOWARD is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Aggravated Murder, Murder in the First Degree, and Murder in the Second Degree, as well as two counts of Robbery in the First Degree, four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and one count each of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree.
“This week, the family of Detective Randolph Holder will have to spend their first holiday with an empty seat at the table,” said District Attorney Vance. “The death of Detective Holder shook our city, and left his loved ones without a fiancé, a son, and a brother. The defendant in this case, Tyrone Howard, is charged with willfully and maliciously murdering one of New York’s Finest. This prosecution will not bring back this brave public servant, but we hope, by seeking justice, it will bring a measure of comfort for Detective Holder’s family, his colleagues in the NYPD, and the City as a whole.”
According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, at approximately 8:43 p.m. on October 20, 2015, in the vicinity of the East River Promenade at the East 120th Street footbridge, HOWARD, knowing the victim was a New York City police officer, intentionally shot Officer Holder, leading to his death. Officer Holder was posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective on October 28, 2015.
Assistant District Attorneys Linda Ford, Senior Trial Counsel, Meghan Hast, and Sherita Walton are handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Warren J. Murray, Chief of Trial Bureau 50, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.
The charges contained in the indictment are merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
