DA Vance Announces Indictment of Wife and Brother-in-Law for 1996 Murder of Howard Pilmar

August 15, 2017

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of ROSLYN PILMAR, 60, and her brother EVAN WALD, 43, for murdering her husband, Howard Pilmar, inside his business on March 21, 1996. PILMAR and WALD are charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with Murder in the Second Degree.[1]

“In 1996, this murder shocked New Yorkers, mystified law enforcement, and the killers eluded justice,” said District Attorney Vance. “But, in the more than two decades that have passed since Howard Pilmar was brutally stabbed to death, prosecutors in my Office’s Cold Case Unit and NYPD detectives never forgot this shocking crime. I thank them for their dedication, and hope that this prosecution will bring closure to Mr. Pilmar’s loved ones.”

According to the indictment and statements made on the record in court, for approximately 15 years, PILMAR was employed at a dentist’s office. She left the position in 1995 and began working as a manager for coffee shops started by her husband. The following year, her former employer discovered that she had stolen approximately $200,000 from the business and demanded reimbursement.

On the evening of March 21, 1996, 40-year-old Howard Pilmar was stabbed and slashed by the defendants more than 25 times at his office on East 33rd Street. The victim’s body was found the next morning by the company’s controller.

Following the murder, PILMAR received almost $1.5 million in life insurance benefits, ownership of Howard Pilmar’s office supply and coffee shop businesses, a summer home, an Upper East Side apartment, and custody of the couple’s then 10-year-old son. On April 30, 1999, she pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny in the Second Degree for the theft from her former employer. After paying back the stolen funds, she was sentenced to probation.

Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Lederer, Senior Trial Counsel of the Forensic Sciences/Cold Case Unit, and Melissa Hindman, Trial Bureau 80, are handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Melissa Mourges, Chief of the Forensic Sciences/Cold Case Unit and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Supervising Detective Investigator Siobhan Berry, Paralegal Alison Miller, and Financial Intelligence Director David Rosenzweig provided assistance with the investigation.

District Attorney Vance thanked the members of the NYPD’s Midtown South Detective Squad, especially retired Lieutenant James West, Detectives Arthur Caddigan, Gary Scollard, Mark Grogan, and retired Detectives Richard Breicke and Lawrence Marcario.

[1]The charges contained in the indictment are merely an allegation, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
