DA Vance: Devin Brown Charged with Violently Attacking 61-Year-Old Woman on the Lower East Side

June 21, 2017

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the indictment of DEVIN BROWN, 24, for assaulting and attempting to rob a 61-year-old woman on the Lower East Side. The defendant is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Attempted Robbery in the First Degree.[1]

“Devin Brown is accused of brutally attacking a 61-year-old woman while she was walking alone on the Lower East Side, without any apparent provocation,” said District Attorney Vance. “The details of this senseless attack are truly shocking – the defendant is accused of continuing to assault the victim as she lay motionless on the ground. No one should have to fear walking our City’s streets and my Office will continue to vigorously prosecute anyone who threatens the safety of our citizens.”

According to documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court, at approximately 6:00 a.m. on May 20, 2017, BROWN approached a 61-year-old woman on Forsyth Street in the Lower East Side, and punched her, knocking her to the ground. While the victim was motionless, the defendant rifled through her pockets and then proceeded to stomp on her head and kick her. BROWN only stopped attacking the woman when an eyewitness approached. That eyewitness called the police, who arrived on the scene and arrested the defendant in a nearby deli.

The victim suffered bleeding in her brain, among other injuries, and remains hospitalized.

Assistant District Attorneys Alissa Marque and Courtney Groves are handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Lisa DelPizzo, Chief of Trial Bureau 30, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance also thanked the members of NYPD’s 5th Precinct, especially Detective Chris Rong and Officer Oscar Li for their assistance with the case.

[1] The charges contained in the indictment are merely allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. All factual recitations are derived from documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court.
