Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of MING GUANG HUANG, 32, to 13 years in state prison for attacking his then-23-year-old wife with a meat cleaver in Chinatown in February 2013, leaving her covered with deep gashes on her head, neck, and body. On December 14, 2016, the defendant pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree.
“In a heinous act of spousal abuse, Ming Guang Huang hacked his wife within an inch of her life on a crowded city sidewalk,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. “My Office will not tolerate acts of domestic violence – whether they are committed in the home or on the street. I would like to thank the brave members of the FDNY who intervened and rescued this survivor, and my Office’s prosecutors for bringing her abuser to justice. If you have been the victim of domestic violence, please call my Office’s domestic abuse hotline at (212) 335-4308.”
As admitted in the defendant’s guilty plea, at approximately 10:30 a.m. on February 24, 2013, HUANG was arguing with his wife when he physically dragged her from her place of employment to the vicinity of 74 Canal Street in Chinatown, where the dispute escalated. HUANG began striking her repeatedly with a meat cleaver until two New York City Firefighters, who were standing nearby, intervened and restrained him. The attack left HUANG’s wife bleeding on the sidewalk and suffering from multiple severe gashes – two of which penetrated the victim’s skull, pierced her brain, and required an extended hospital stay and intensive surgery to treat.
Assistant District Attorney Steven Nuzzi handled the prosecution of the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Alfred Peterson, Chief of Trial Bureau 70, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.
District Attorney Vance also thanked Sergeant Melissa Lee of the New York Police Department’s Housing Bureau PSA 4 and FDNY Firefighters James Trainor and Jose Ortiz for their assistance with the case.
