Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of DWIGHT REID, 45, to 50 years-to-life in state prison for shooting and killing a 33-year-old man inside of a bar in Central Harlem. On March 8, 2017, a New York State Supreme Court jury found the defendant guilty of all the charges in the indictment against him: Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
“The callousness of Dwight Reid’s crime reveals his complete and utter disregard for human life,” said District Attorney Vance. “After gunning down a 33-year-old father of two with a single shot in the forehead, the defendant continued to attack the victim, a total stranger, whipping him with the murder weapon as he lay dead. A crime of such brutal violence deserves the maximum sentence, and now, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.”
As proven at trial, at approximately 3:09 a.m. on January 8, 2014, REID and the victim, Calvern Wallace, began arguing at PJ’s Lounge on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard near West 131st Street when the defendant briefly left the bar. After returning minutes later, REID approached Mr. Wallace with a handgun, held it up to his head, and fired a single shot, killing him. REID then struck Mr. Wallace in the head with the weapon before fleeing to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There, he evaded police while living under an alias for more than four months, until he was apprehended following a subsequent arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol on May 17, 2014.
Assistant District Attorneys Jessica Troy, Deputy Chief of Trial Bureau 70, and Elizabeth Clerkin handled the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney David O’Keefe, Deputy Chief of the Trial Division, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Senior Rackets Investigator William Hicks also assisted with the prosecution of this case.
District Attorney Vance also thanked Detectives Delano Grant and Ruben Henriquez of the Manhattan DA Squad; Detective Ervin Urbina of the 32nd Precinct Detective Squad; and Detective Patrick Purcell of the Manhattan North Homicide Detective Squad.
