District Attorney Vance: Richard Hovan Convicted on All Counts for Statutory Rape of 16-Year-Old Student

February 27, 2015

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the trial conviction of RICHARD HOVAN, 33, a former high school teacher in the Bronx, for the statutory rape of a 16-year-old student in April and May 2011. A New York State Supreme Court jury found HOVAN guilty of all of the charges in the indictment against him: five counts of Rape in the Third Degree, three counts of Criminal Sexual Act in the Third Degree, and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He is expected to be sentenced on March 24, 2015.

“Each day we send our children to school, trusting that they are safe from harm in the care of their teachers,” said District Attorney Vance. “Richard Hovan utterly betrayed that trust by abusing his position of power and engaging in a sexual relationship with a student. The defendant emotionally manipulated this teenage girl to engage in sexual conduct, and attempted to manipulate evidence and the testimony of a witness in an effort to disguise his actions. With the jury’s guilty verdict, he is being held responsible for his crimes. I would like to thank the jury for its service, and my Office’s Sex Crimes prosecutors for ensuring that justice was done. I urge anyone who believes that a child may be at risk to call our Child Abuse Hotline at (212) 335-4308.”

As proven at trial, beginning in December 2010, HOVAN, a math teacher at a private high school in the Bronx, exchanged numerous emails, texts, and phone calls with one of his students over the course of several months. HOVAN was convicted of engaging in sexual intercourse and sexual conduct with that student multiple times in April and May 2011 in his Manhattan apartment.

Assistant District Attorneys Shanda Strain and Jung Park prosecuted this case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Martha Bashford, Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit, Executive Assistant District Attorney Audrey Moore, Chief of the Special Victims Bureau, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Investigator Lauren Liebhauser assisted with the case.
