From January through April 2018, eight Manhattan A.D.A. and eight residents of Queensboro Correctional Facility studied criminal justice together alongside one another in a seminar setting taught by Columbia University Professor of Psychology Geraldine Downey and Manhattan D.A. Academy Executive Director Lucy Lang. The course, Inside Criminal Justice, included in-depth discussion centered on lived experience as well as analysis of readings about the origins and evolution of the criminal justice system, the history of race in America, the psychology of punishment, and the development of a healthy framework for cultivating individual and community well-being and social and political engagement.

In April 2018, the Academy hosted the Certificate Conferral Ceremony for Inside Criminal Justice. Teams of A.D.A. and Queensboro students presented jointly researched and drafted criminal justice policy proposals for their final projects. More than one hundred attendees witnessed the Ceremony including speeches by District Attorney Cyrus Vance, New York State Department of Corrections Commissioner Anthony Annucci, Queensboro Correctional Facility Warden Dennis Breslin, and Columbia University School of General Studies Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch.
