Statement by Manhattan D.A. Cy Vance, Jr. on Reckless Driver Accountability Act

February 11, 2019

“As Manhattan District Attorney, nothing is more important to me than the safety of the millions of residents and visitors who walk and bike our crowded streets. In case after case, our prosecutors see firsthand the devastating consequences that can result from a habitually reckless driver who should have been taken off the road sooner. My Office will continue to prosecute criminal traffic violence aggressively in the wake of these incidents, but our City must also go much further in expanding tools that prevent these crashes from occurring in the first place. This is why my Office is strongly supporting Council Member Lander’s Reckless Driver Accountability Act – a bill which establishes real consequences for reckless driving, and fairly empowers our City to remove driving privileges from those who pose the greatest risk. This bill will prevent vehicular crimes and save precious lives, and I applaud Council Member Lander and Families for Safe Streets for their work to get it passed.”
