Statement by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., on Indictment of Suspended Immigration Attorney Carlos Moreno

October 19, 2018

“Promises of a so-called ’10-year visa’ can be misleading and dangerous,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. “If someone has offered you help with obtaining a supposed ’10-year green card’ without explaining that you will be placed in removal proceedings and expose yourself to the risk of deportation, I urge you to call my Office’s Immigrant Affairs Unit Hotline at 212-335-3600 immediately. My Office is a safe place for undocumented New Yorkers to report fraud.

“As alleged in this case, the defendant – an attorney who was previously suspended from practicing law – not only stole thousands of dollars from immigrant New Yorkers while offering fraudulent legal services, he placed these vulnerable victims at greater risk of being deported.”

“I thank our partners at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, members of the New York Asylum Office’s Fraud Detection and National Security Unit, and the New York Legal Assistance Group for their assistance with this investigation.”
