Statement by PAGV Co-Chairs Mike Feuer and Cy Vance, Jr. on House Passage of the Bipartisan Background Checks Bill

February 27, 2019

“Prosecutors across the United States applaud the House of Representatives for passing the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. A bipartisan majority of the House has acted. We call on members of the Senate to show the same courage and leadership.

“Nine out of ten Americans support this common sense gun violence prevention measure, for good reason: our nation is in the throes of a gun violence epidemic unprecedented in our history. Almost 40,000 Americans were killed by firearms in 2017 — the most in nearly four decades, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No location in America is immune from this peril – not our houses of worship, our schools, our places of leisure and entertainment, our streets, or our homes. This bill, if passed by the Senate and signed by President Trump, would require a background check on all gun sales, thereby eliminating loopholes in federal law that enable people who are prohibited from possessing firearms to avoid background checks entirely. It is an essential, long-overdue step toward combating the uniquely American tragedy of gun violence, and the Senate should approve it without delay.”
