Statement by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., on Legislation to Modernize and Strengthen Cybercrime and Identity Theft Laws

January 6, 2017

“Cybercrime and identity theft represent the fastest growing crime category in New York, and a clear and present danger to our residents and institutions. New York prosecutors need strong, contemporary laws to combat this increasingly pervasive threat. As co-chair of the White Collar Crime Task Force, I have long advocated for common-sense updates to our identity theft statutes which better reflect the severity of the offense, the number of individuals victimized, and the financial damage caused. I thank Governor Cuomo for his leadership and collaboration, and I encourage our state legislators to enact these critical updates.”
