Statement by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., on NYPD Commissioner William J. Bratton’s Service to New York City

August 2, 2016

“Bill Bratton is perhaps the world’s most innovative leader in policing and public safety. New York is a safer place because of his tireless service and unparalleled vision as the City’s top cop. Fittingly, we know it is a safer place because Commissioner Bratton pioneered the use of technology to track crime, address community concerns, direct limited law enforcement resources, and measure results.

“Over the past two and a half years, he has been a collaborative partner, open-minded and receptive to a broad range of ideas and perspectives about how to improve public safety and make the criminal justice system more fair. I was proud to have worked with him to enact systemic reforms that reach far beyond our courtrooms, from the $90 million NYPD Mobility initiative – which changes the way police work to keep us safe and make better-informed judgments in the field – to the Manhattan summons initiative, the Project Reset youth diversion program, and the Clean Slate warrant forgiveness events.

“I have been privileged to stand next to Commissioner Bratton and top members of his team more than a dozen times to announce the takedowns of violent street gangs, the interruption of interstate gun trafficking rings, and the dismantling of major domestic cybercrime and identity theft operations. He has been a great friend to law enforcement, as well as to me personally. With Jimmy O’Neill at the helm, the NYPD is poised to build upon the historic gains in public safety achieved under Commissioner Bratton’s leadership. I wish Bill the very best in the next chapter of his distinguished career.”
