Statement by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. on Proposed Reforms to New York State’s Criminal Justice System

January 9, 2017

“New York deserves the fairest, safest, and most forward-looking criminal justice system in the nation. If enacted, the justice agenda set forth by Governor Cuomo will bring that vision within reach.

“From raising the age of criminal responsibility, to reducing pre-trial detention and wrongful convictions, to empowering prosecutors to combat cybercrime, these proposals would increase effectiveness and confidence in our justice system, without sacrificing public safety.

“In 2016, I was proud to partner with Governor Cuomo to fund the recording of police interrogations across the State, as well as college courses for incarcerated New Yorkers who will soon re-enter our communities. I commend the Governor for making comprehensive criminal justice reform a priority this year, and look forward to working with our legislative partners in the months ahead.”
