Statement of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence Co-Chairs Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. and Mike Feuer on Today’s Supreme Court Decision Regarding Firearms Possession by Domestic Abusers

June 27, 2016

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision confirming that domestic violence abusers convicted of a broad range of violent misdemeanors can be barred from owning weapons. Guns and domestic violence are a lethal combination. When an abusive partner is permitted access to firearms, the risk that the other partner – usually a woman – will be killed increases more than five-fold. Earlier this year, Prosecutors Against Gun Violence and the Consortium for Risk-Based Firearms Policy issued a blueprint for jurisdictions throughout the nation seeking guidance on how to prevent domestic abusers from having guns. Today’s decision will help save countless lives.”
